The facts:

The swine influenza virus is a respiratory disease.

The main symptoms are similar to a cold but these symptoms are more severe. There may be high fever, coughing, fatigue, anorexia, eye pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, breathing difficulties, colic, etc. Globally, some patients have died from swine flu. 55 cases have been reported in the UK as of 10/05/2009.

Human infection from swine flu often occurs in the winter and spring seasons with an incubation period of  approximately 1 to 7 days. The disease spreads quickly and the body has no natural antibodies. This flu can be transmitted through sneezing, coughing and physical contact. The majority of hospital patients admitted globally are aged 25 to 45 years old. The elderly and children should be especially careful as deaths have been reported.

The high-risk groups are those engaged in the pig farming industry or laboratory staff exposed to swine flu.

The current preventive medical measures available are: waiting for around 3 to 6 months for vaccines to be made; and antibiotics (Oseltamivir and Zanamivir) which are reported to treat the swine influenza virus effectively.

Chinese medicine practitioners do have experience of SARS prevention so they can also treat the symptoms of swine flul. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) will treat the patient as a whole while Western medicine tends to treat the disease rather than the person. Chinese medical practitioners will choose the best combination of methods to relieve pain, stress, and treat diseases which will all result in an improved human immune system.

To minimise the risk of infection, please ensure the following: good indoor ventilation; avoid crowded places; wash your hands; pay attention to your diet and hygiene; ensure all cooked meats have an internal temperature of at least 71 degrees Centigrade in order to completely kill the bacteria and viruses; get adequate sleep; and drink plenty of water.
